Orientation: There's no real indication one way or another, but he gets flustered about compliments by Nishinoya and he's offered comments about cute girls on the poster in the changing room, so I'm gonna go with no preference. He's also a little young to be worrying about age-ups.

History: The struggle of the formerly weak-willed.
Appearance:

in his natural habitat, babysitting teammates.

Look at him, isn't he cute. Chikara's 5'9" and athletic. He's a little built despite that gif... mostly in the arms. He's got dark brown-black hair and eyes that are heavily lidded - he always looks a little sleepy.

Personality: On and off the court, Chikara Ennoshita is the kind of person it's easy to overlook. He's a calm sort of person: polite, level-headed and mild-mannered. He worries after his teammates and tries to limit the amount of ridiculous bullshit they get up to, but even the latter is done with as little fanfare as possible. Opponents comment that he's just kind of 'there' when the series opens and he's still filling in as the third regular wing spiker while ace Asahi is on sabbatical. This position is one Chikara seems at peace with: when Asahi returns, Chikara doesn't hold any grudges, and accepts being replaced as natural.

Chikara is the voice of reason among the underclassmen, completely unafraid to assert a little common sense into the easily-excited team atmosphere, much like Daichi. When Tanaka and Nishinoya try to run from discussing (shock and horror!) grades, he's the one sent to catch them, like a Pokemon trainer, and he does like it's old hat. Tanaka's older sister Saeko calls him the 'don' of the second years: he makes Tanaka and Nishinoya cower when necessary, and he's also taken to reining in the troublemaking freshmen in recent months as of his canon point. He's someone who clearly pays a lot of attention to his teammates: he knows the best ways to handle the antics of the people he's been teammates of since his first year, and he learns the freshmen over the course of canon. He's also capable of talking to Karasuno's dazzlingly beautiful manager without any of the dazzled and brain-dead reactions of his more girl-crazy teammates, probably because he's capable of seeing her as a normal person (like the third years do). While he's unafraid to call out his teammates - he walks past an obnoxiously carefree Tanaka and Nishinoya and brings them back down to earth by reminding them he's not going to be helping them finish their summer homework - he's also helpful - when Kageyama is having problems adjusting his tosses to Tsukishima, who is a more thoughtful player than the instinctive Hinata, Chikara calls out his irritable expression and reminds him that their teammates are strong and have good technique and 'sense' for volleyball (in contrast to Hinata, but he tries to be tactful until Hinata just says 'yeah I'm awful').

While Chikara has a tendency to bring his fellow second years up short, he's also fiercely protective of his younger teammates when necessary: when Coach Ukai is about to yell at freshman pinch server Yamaguchi for using a less-risky but less-effective version of his specialized serve, Chikara steps in and tells Coach 'he already knows' - meaning that Yamaguchi is probably the most regretful about his decision not to use a floating jump serve in the face of nearly flubbing his first serve. It's not a move the generally retiring, well-behaved Ennoshita is known for, but it's an important one to him, especially after filling in for Daichi during the match: he'd been uneven, unsettled and nowhere near committed enough until until he takes a little inspiration from Hinata and Kageyama talking about doing everything you, yourself, can do, instead of wasting time wanting to be someone with more experience than you. He'd originally tried to sooth Yamaguchi's nerves by admitting he feels like he's about to puke, giving Yamaguchi someone else to focus on besides himself.

Chikara has, on occasion, called himself a 'disgraceful second year who ran away' - referring to his time at a first year, when the hellish practices of Ukai Sr. made him skip out on practice for a few days. He returned three days later, but by then Ukai Senior has had to retire because of a heart condition. This weighs heavily on Chikara: he carries his 'formerly weak-willed' self on his back. Despite the incident being a year ago, he refers to it as a failing when the second years discuss who they intend on making the captain after the third years retire. Nishinoya suggests Chikara without a second thought, and when he points out he gave up, before, Tanaka says that makes him more understanding of all of their teammates. He knows what it's like to have doubts, and that makes him capable of dealing with both the headstrong and determined types and the more laid-back or insecure types.

Despite this burden of past indiscretion, Chikara isn't without ambition. When Tanaka talks at length about how nice it'd be to have a girlfriend to cheer him on, he tells him that if he keeps up the daydreaming, he's going to lose his regular spot. After the game with Wakunan, when he stands in for Daichi, he excuses himself to the bathroom to cry out of frustration - he's glad Daichi is okay, of couse, but bitter that Daichi's return means he won't get to play any more, even though he'd just been getting into the groove. He returns for the team's second game of the day and cheers as usual, though - his own feelings are something private, and he's not going to let them get in the way of the team's morale and victory.

In all, Chikara is calm and pleasant, but snarky and quietly ambitious. He watches out for his teammates without complaint and wants desperately to be the kind of committed, reliable player Daichi is, knowing it means he'll be constantly overshadowed. His name is a play off the idiom "en no shita no chikaramochi": literally "a strong man under the veranda", but interpreted as meaning someone who does hard work and is never recognized for it, and it's essentially who he's learning to become by taking cues from Daichi, who isn't flashy but who is rock-steady, and by struggle to fulfill his own desire to be a player who doesn't run away, who overcomes their own weak will and helps others do the same.

Abilities:

Just sass. Nah but Chikara's a normal kid: he's not a particularly committed volleyball player, but he's thoughtful and capable enough once he's settled in. He's smart - he's seen teaching the resident team dumbasses repeatedly, and 'never has problems with his grades' - and artistic - he's written-and-directed several self-produced films, including that time he made Tsukishima Harry Potter. He's also adept at putting the other second years and the first years on proverbial leashes.
